APPS2400 Golf Game Description
Game Description:
The game is played on two 4 x 5 grids. The left grid is the frontnine and the right
is the backnine. This emulates a Par 72 golf course with 4 - par 3s, 10 - par 4s
and 4- par 5s. At the start of the game, the game board looks like this.

The holes are numbered 1-9 on the left grid(front nine). The first five holes are the
horizontal ones, numbering 1 to 5 from top to bottom. Hole1-par 3, hole 2 Par 4, hole 3
par 4, hole 4 par 4 and hole 5 is the bottom par 3. Holes 6 thru 9 are vertical holes
starting from the left. The remaining holes 10 thru 18 following th same pattern on the
right grid. Holes 10 thru 14 are horizontal holes and holes 15 through 18 are vertical.
Six cards are placed randomly in the grid. Thirty-six cards will be dealt one at a time.
The player has approx. 25 seconds to place the card to get the best golf scores for all holes.
Scoring:
game is scored in 2 ways. Points are given to a hole by the relative frequency of
the set of cards that occur in the 52-card deck. For example, a Pair in a three-card hole scores
5 points and gets a Par 3 as a golf score. Whereas, a Pair in a five-card hole receives only 3
points and receives a golf score of 6 (Bogey) because it has a much greater frequency. Also,
3 of a kind in a three-card hole receives 19 points and is awarded a golf score of 2(Birdie).
A player's goal is to optimize their golf score not necessarily their points score.
This mimics real golf play because each card placed is part of two holes, a horizontal hole
and a vertical hole. Golfers generally play to reduce the number of blow up holes, double
and triple bogeys. In APPS2400 Golf there are many opportunities to go for a big hole, a birdie
or possibly an eagle. However, consideration must be given to the other hand to ensure the
second hand is not a Double Bogey which would wipe out all the good the Eagle did.
For example: If you have 2 incomplete holes that have one card missing. One is a horizontal
hole with 3 Aces and a fourth Ace of Spades comes up for placement. The vertical 5-card hole
is an incomplete diamond flush. If you place the Ace of Spades you will receive 31 points
and an Eagle(2) but the vertical flush will be ruined and a score of -5 and a Double Bogey(7)
is the golf score. If you did not place the Ace of Spades but waited for a diamond, this is
the way the scores would be recorded. You would receive a score of 22 for 3 of a kind in a
4-card hole and a Birdie(3). As well, the 5-card flush is worth 16 points and a Birdie(4). In
the first case the score for 2 holes is 26 and even par. In the second case, the score is 38
and 2 under par. In golf any one hole is limited to 6 Possible scores; Eagle, Birdie, Par, Bogey,
Double Bogey or other. There is an overlap between the points scored to get a Par, Birdie etc.
It is quite possible for two players to have the same point score but very different golf
scores. So, when you are playing in an APPS2400 golf tournament you must carefully consider
the placement of each card and how the golf score will be affected.
Once a player has played some rounds, like in real golf, the scores will improve with the practice.
again, like in real golf, only really good players break par consistently.
